It’s funny how art can transcend time and medium so fluidly. In 1872, Claude Monet debuted a painting of a sunrise over the sea, and 150 years later, an indie band out of Austin, Texas, captures the same feeling in song. Pensive, calm, and reflective, Very Busy People perfectly conveys this beautiful image in their new single, “Impression, Sunrise”. A clever title, considering how the song explores personal interpretation of art while being, itself, an interpretation of a work of art.
The track bolsters some of the most laid-back surf sound you can find, but also features a wide range of influences that offer new notes to enjoy on every listen. The intro guitar riff immediately struck me as reminiscent of The Cure, especially in the style of their album Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. “Impression, Sunrise” plays with the new wave sound with such levity, while sticking to the surf rock M.O. that defines much of their previous work.
The vocals on this track take on a life of their own as well, evoking emotional tones similar to Turnstile’s Brendan Yates. While the song is by no means hardcore, this gives it a satisfying edge that I often find lacking in bands of the same genre. The fact that such a comparison can be made speaks to the track’s versatile and complex nature, let alone the rest of their discography.
Give this track a listen and ride the waves. Also check out Very Busy People’s new EP dropping March 27.
