Single: UT Kirin – Absolute Savage Years

Some songs don’t take long for you to know that you’re going to love them; this one took me all of about 2.5 seconds to realise that fact.

The new single from UT Kirin, the Austin, TX-based indie rock and psychedelic project of HR Huber Rodriguez, is a song about a girl away at college, forced to move back to the family farm in the Midwest after a family death.

The music, at odds with the often-painful lyrics, is filled with rugged, chugging rhythm guitar and Midwest-style jangly riffs, all the while the vocals sing and shout about the pain of losing someone and the changes that life can bring unexpectedly.

“Nevertheless, it’s a cold ride. Back to her Midwestern life” is just one of the many great lines in this song invoking the change that many of us face at some point in our lives, whether wanted or unwanted.

At times, it sounds like Ezra Furman, and at other times, a touch of Pavement, while diving into Midwest Emo territory; the song builds as it rides along before finishing in a flurry of guitars.

Keep an ear out for more from UT Kirin, and be sure to check out the extensive back catalogue.
