This song to me is essentially Death Cab for Cutie on a hip-hop type beat. Second Life, a song by Underexposed, is a beautiful piece about simpler times. He uses an example from when he was a kid, taking apart a wooden porch with his dad and using those old parts to build planter boxes for his mother.
For the first 30 seconds, you think you’re going to get a wonderful acoustic track about that story, but then suddenly you hear a drum machine kick in, which adds another element of beauty to the song. It took me until my third listen to finally figure out why it sounded familiar, went to YouTube and played the first Death Cab song that popped up and immediately saw the connection. From the beautiful lyricism to the way the vocals are delivered, I can tell Ben Gibbard was a big influence on Underexposed.
You can listen to Second Life and the rest of the Underexposed discography anywhere you buy and stream music. Follow him on Instagram here https://instagram.com/ndr_xpsd/. I can’t wait to see where he goes from here, but until then, I’ll be listening to everything else he has put out.
