Toriyama is a new slowcore project of an artist formerly known as Television Blonde, whom we had the pleasure of introducing on our blog before. This is the first single from this project that has been released. One of the best things about our blog was always sharing fresh artists who are just debuting with a single or an EP (album). Somehow, the feel of untouched (unheard) music has been highly satisfying, and I love to return to it whenever I can.
The artist shared a little quote about this track:
“An intimate slowcore track about finding safety in someone’s presence. Hypnotic repetition turns ‘You are exactly what I need’ into a mantra, blending vulnerability and devotion. Grounded in small, tactile moments: a locket, a phone call, a promise.”
When I heard this track for the first time, it gave me instantly early Alex G vibes that I had totally forgotten about. It has brought me a lot of great memories. Toriyama is taking Alex G’s overtuned vocals and putting them into a slowcore dress, and it is working well together. As the artist stated, the song is like a mantra that you will listen to repeatedly to fully grasp the atmosphere.
I have been playing this on repeat to get lost in the lo-fi warmness of the song and the vocals that keep captivate me the same way as Alex G did back when I discovered his music for the first time. Perhaps the 2010s are back, and we are reliving the best years this blog has experienced again. I am glad this Alex G approach is not dying out, and I don’t mind that for some people it might sound similar, because I loved it from the first note.
A great slowcore, melancholic, lo-fi bedroom pop that will leave you impressed and longing for more. I cannot wait to see what Toriyama will make next, but I hope we will have a chance to listen to it.
