Single: Tiberius – Sag

As Sag begins, it feels like it’s comprised of part post-punk/new wave and part slacker rock vibes. Very quickly, the quirky, distinctive voice of frontperson Brendan Wright (they/them) comes in. We’re reminded a little bit of the more ragged moments of Conor Oberst, as well as a lot of Tokyo Police Club vocalist Dave Monks.

Originally a solo project for Wright, Tiberius has evolved into a catchy and cacophonous four-piece, producing what Wright quite brilliantly calls “Farm Emo.”

Musically, this is angular, wonky and arty, but – somewhat surprisingly – it doesn’t feel pretentious. From the outset, the musicianship is tight and considered. As it progresses, it ramps up and becomes dirtier, more ferocious, and recalls the work of early Placebo, Modest Mouse at their heaviest, and Biffy Clyro at their visceral best.

It also goes back the other way and becomes softer again, after exploding. The music has a touch of alt-country about it, with warm pedal steel sounds being added to the mix and atmosphere for days.

This is ambitious and unique stuff and deserves your full attention. Boston’s Tiberius has announced their new album, ‘Troubadour,’ for release via Audio Antihero on November 14th. They’re also on a small American tour next month – catch them if you’re lucky enough to be able to do so.
