Single: Thomas Prothero – Quiet Life

A song of two halves comprised of analogue warmth, creamy guitars, pulsating synths and a surprise explosion, Prothero has outdone himself yet again.

A song of two distinct halves, the first part of Thomas Prothero’s new single “Quiet Life” begins with what sounds like a cassette being inserted into a player and the Play button being pushed (swoon).

From there we meet an electronic beat which is paired with ambient sound, gentle piano, and hushed vocals. The overall feeling is one of electronic indie-folkiness: All reserved, lo-fi, analogue warmth, like Fleet Foxes meeting a more subdued Caribou. Eventually, a pulsating synth line comes in and serves as a beautiful backdrop to a heartwrenching chorus. “I can’t face another crisis I don’t wanna be involved, I can’t face another riddle that I don’t know how to solve”, Thomas sings, as the song ticks along.

Then, all of a sudden, it stops suddenly and the tape is ejected, and Quiet Life explodes into life.

A booming, grandiose sound compared to what preceded it, the second half of the song is big, rootsy, bassy, and gritty like Hozier collaborating with Royal Blood. It features some really lovely creamy guitar tones and, we must say, appears to be expertly produced. (Shout out to Yours Truly).

With another fantastic single out into the ether, Thomas Prothero has outdone himself yet again. Take a listen to “Quiet Life” below.
