Single: lazybed – acquaintance

Macau-based songwriter Richard Winstanley channels assorted rock greats on the debut single from his new DIY lo-fi project.

lazybed is the musical project of Macau-based Filipino songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Richard Winstanley.

Formerly going by Cardz and also previously experimenting with a fictional band called The Yankies, on his debut single under this name he has developed a carefully crafted sonic palette which he uses to paint hazy, beautiful pictures.

Entirely self-written, recorded, mixed and performed (except for the Logic-provided drums), acquaintance is a testament to the musical aptitude of its author.

At its heart, the song is a jangly lo-fi indie rock tune but that’s doing it a bit of a disservice. It’s a heart-on-sleeve, earnest declaration of intent. As debut singles go, this is a fantastic start.

He cites artists like Broken Social Scene, Blur and Mac Demarco as influences, and we can certainly hear these in the outro, overall whimsy, and laid back vibes, respectively. But there’s more at play. The dynamics of Pixies, the intrigue and poise of Death Cab For Cutie, and the explosiveness of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart all rear their head too.

The shoegazey outro is the cherry on top of a delicious cake, and something we didn’t see coming. But it’s something that ensures we will definitely be paying close attention to lazybed going forward. Take a listen to “acquaintance” below.
