Single: The First Eloi – In Sepia

Hamburg’s The First Eloi return to the blog after just over 2 months away. The new track – In Sepia – comes hot on the heels of the previous single, Blanket Cave (which was excellently reviewed by Alexei Lee here).

This new tune is a bit of a chameleon. It’s as sweet as you like but also significantly cutting in places. The chainsaw guitars provide diametric opposition to the sweet, synthy swirls that are prevalent throughout the song. But they go together beautifully – each one complementing the other perfectly.

Reminiscent of up-and-coming UK band Mannequin Flowers, the combination of shoegaze tones and the distinct dreaminess at play here means that the song would be at home on a playlist dedicated to either genre. Of course, there’s more than a touch of The Old Masters, My Bloody Valentine, here, too. On top of that and the beautiful, syrupy, sweet vocals, things get more than a little bit gritty and grungey; there’s really so much to appreciate here.
