The new single from Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist Michael Kelly (known professionally as Buckley’s Angel) is an absolutely joyous romp.
It starts kind of bizarrely with what sounds like an audio recording of an electronic jack-in-a-box or an 8-bit video game and then an automated phone number reading – but it very quickly finds its feet.
The beat drops, the rhythm hits and the guitars range from glittery to gritty. The chorus is as sing-a-longy as a chorus can be (“whyyy-ay-yah-yai!”). There are strong pop sensibilities prevalent throughout the duration of the song, bringing to mind the work of bass like Alvvays, DIIV and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.
