Spirited, spritely and inspired, the new single from California-based rock trio The Blurry Stars starts with gusto, kicking off – rather uncommonly – with a guitar solo. There is a jaunty ska-inflection to the guitars in the verses that remind us of Sublime and a despondency and a disillusionment to the delivery of some of the lyrics that feels earnest and necessary.
Led by songwriter, singer, guitarist and also producer Sean Alan (who must be a very busy boy!), there’s a musicality here – specifically in the breakdowns – that feels somewhat at odds with the vibe of the majority of the verses. These changes in pace and dynamics demonstrate a songwriting adaptability that is impressive, endearing and encouraging. There’s an agility to the writing that makes the stylistic pivots blend seamlessly. We’re reminded – at various points – of the garage rock revival of the mid ’00s, North American pop punk like Sum 41 and AFI and old school UK rock vibes reminiscent of bands like The Wildhearts.
The descending chord progression used multiple times throughout the song – when it’s at its quietest and most reserved – is quite beautiful, a classy glimmer of light in amongst the punky attitude that permeates the majority of the song. The band tell us that The Squeeze “goes out to everyone in a tight spot, taking heat, under the gun, against the wall, feeling the squeeze…” – that’s what you call relatable content.
