The Abruptors have announced a third studio album on the heels of last year’s outstanding sophomore album Noticeably Cheerless on Asian Man Records. Last year’s album did a great job as establishing The Abruptors sound, a unique take on a moderate to fast paced two tone ska band. The announcement of this third album, to be titled Everything You Know Is Wrong came with the release of the first single- “Such a Mess”.
The single confirms what the last album proved- The Abruptors are one of the best two tone ska bands, letting the keys do much of the heavy work while the horns are mostly playing accents. The song is about failed relationships, falling for someone more than they fall for you, and opening your heart to someone and things just not working out, the vocals are on point, the upstrokes on the guitar are solid, laying an easy beat to dance to, but I’m really impressed how well the song travels from the beginning to the end. There are several parts where you just want to groove with the bass guitar, the sax takes center stage for a few seconds a couple different times, and the drums grab you a few times for their own few moments in the spotlight, all without the benefit of any solos or bridges.
All in all, this song hints that this album is the lead to a very powerful third album, where the band has really come into its own, has established their sound, and are taking the opportunity to really show off their skill and their ability to work with one another. Everyone seems to be playing together to make everyone sound just a little better than ever before. Noticeably Cheerless is only a year old and still feels young and fresh and exciting, and to hear the growth between then and now is incredible.
