Californian jangle-pop/indie rock band Sweet Nobody have released Revenge – their first new single for over a year.
The band say they write anthems for the soft-spoken, the unassuming, the overlooked, and the under-appreciated.
At under 3 minutes, there’s no time to mess about, and the band gets straight down to it with a catchy hook and an immediate driving energy.
A fuzzy guitar comes and goes, adding extra texture, and the high guitar part weaves through the track like a silk thread.
Those perky rhythm guitars and the jaunty sound really reminded me of classic tracks by The Housemartins, and if you weren’t paying attention, you might miss the seriousness of the lyrics.
Joy’s bright and breezy vocal has a subtle slapback echo, which gives it a rounded sound. She sings:
“It doesn’t feel like what you’re telling me is real
You beg and steal to make your appeal
Like any lie, there’s a little truth inside
Rules don’t apply to you, my dear”
I’m sure everyone reading this has experienced poison and vitriol on social media to some degree or other, and the song maximises every single line to dissect and shine a light on the issue:
“Pick up your pen
Accusations fly again
It’s all pretend
Even your friends”
The band say that Revenge is about isolation, conflict & lying. It’s for those without an angle. It’s for those who love the straightforward.
Well, with Revenge, they have delivered a straightforward slice of undeniable indie-pop.
