Single: Super Cassette – Hurts Don’t It

I fucking love this song. That’s it. That’s the review. I love this song, and you need to hear it.

There is a reason that Super Cassette is my favorite non-ska band. Their songs are incredible. Great lyrics, beautiful vocals, and, every now and then, absolutely gorgeous guitar solos and this song features all of the above.

“Carry your heart out in the open, never feel broken, ’cause nothing is doomed, even though it hurts, doesn’t it.”

Those lyrics just get to me.

“There will be times when bitterness slips in, moody and missing what makes your soul whole, but it’s something you have to do; own it.”

Damn. I’m just madly in love with those lyrics, but Max Gerlock’s vocals are phenomenal and getting better constantly.

And oh my, what a sexy fucking guitar solo. Seriously. If you’re not singing the guitar solo after the first couple of times you’ve heard this song, then you are a better person than me. I can’t not try to sing along with the guitar. It’s mesmerizing.

This is the first song since Super Cassette’s debut album came out in December of 2023. That album explored depression, mental health struggles, and, ultimately, finding joy and a sense of belonging. This song feels like it takes the next step in the mental health journey, in realizing that life hurts, that there is pain, and that pain is not forever. We are never doomed. And it’s worth opening yourself up to be loved. It’s such a beautiful fucking song in every way.

Do yourself a favor and listen to this song. Go pick up their album. If you live in the Bay Area, go see them live whenever they play. You won’t regret it.
