Southam [south-um] is an indie folk rock band from northeast Georgia, specifically Clarkesville. Dead People is their newest single, which was released a couple of days ago. The band shared that this song is about “not being the person you thought you’d grow up to be.” The band labels them also “Appalachian indie rock”, and I really like this reference to the place where they are coming from.
I really love the opening of the song, not only the instrumental part, but also the lyrics when they sing “here is my statement to the press / about quitting cigarettes / and doing what I said”. How many times have we promised ourselves to do something or promised others to do something and failed to do it? I have lost count of how many times it has been true to myself. This opening of the song made me fall in love with it.
The song had really catchy guitar riffs and an overall upbeat melody, and I really like how it shifts between slower parts. They crafted the acoustic guitar so well, and the song’s overall atmosphere is quite emotive. They masterfully created a melody with a poppy feel, which I have been enjoying. Folky indie rock with great vocals and guitars is something I can get behind anytime.
The band has been releasing music this year, and this is their fourth single. You can find the rest on their Bandcamp page.
Maybe you will relate to the lyrics and the song’s theme, perhaps you will fall in love with the atmosphere, maybe you will get into the stellar guitars, or possibly you will find something else in the song, but I bet you will enjoy this one.
Southam created a stunning single, and I have been blasting it on repeat in my headphones, enjoying its beauty more and more.
