Soapberry is the musical pseudonym of Amsterdam-based songwriter Lisa Brammer. Formerly the vocalist of Dakota (and half of Wy Shika), she took a bit of a hiatus from creating after she left her previous band. Inevitably, the irresistible pull of the magic of music dragged her back in and she’s now flying solo.
Grumpy Cat On A Crimson Red Leather Couch begins and we’re immediately met with sombre, dreamy Phoebe Bridgers vibes. Clean guitars, lots of shimmering reverb, no percussion, prominent, sincere vocals. It’s a beautiful blend of elements and lulls us nicely into a false sense of security.
Almost halfway through, the song kicks in and transforms into a whirlwind of distortion, pounding drums and swirling guitars. We were not expecting that. It’s a cacophonous noise in the best possible way and a welcome surprise that adds another dimension to an already extremely likeable track.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on whatever she does next.
