I absolutely love a song that starts with imagery of walking down the street. It’s only second place to sitting by a river. With that, Sydney-based trio Sleepy’s first single since 2020 is off to a good start. “Clean Clothes” kicks off with our narrator talking to a stranger at the trailer park, if the cover is anything to go by; but more likely just another small dusty town in the Outback: “Hey you, walking in your clean clothes / Hey you, walking down the main road / How have I never seen your face around?”
“Clean Clothes” gives off a certain longing and desperation balanced with a reassuring sense of acceptance and pleasure. Our narrator perhaps finds a new partner while the clean-clothed stranger is persuaded to settle into his or her new home: “Stay until the stars align / It’s okay, it’s only time / It’s not that bad once you’ve been here a while.”
Sleepy’s indie rock jangle lives up to its name. Subdued, joyful and enticing weariness leads to a sort of hypnosis for the listener while avoiding any depressing lethargy. Strumming acoustics, twangy indie electrics, billowing bass, and straight-up no-frills, locked-in drumming set the scene for a song that works equally well whether driving down a long road in the dark or sitting on the porch with a drink in your hand.
