In their latest single “Dweller” off the upcoming album of the same name, Boulder-based SLEEP CLUB continues their shift in a darker direction tone-wise that they started in 2025, and this track showcases both a continuation and evolution of their sound. This time we’re borrowing themes from horror films, with the titular Dweller “glistening chrome and blood” and “steeping in stench”. I was curious if it was a metaphor for something. Matt Jones writes that the song and album is “created around the premise of AI intrusion into our everyday lives”. Gulp. Very timely.
What surprised me was how much I liked the track, as I’m not typically into horror movies at all. “Dweller” oozes with warmth, and is so easy to listen to that you might miss the darker subtext on first listen. Matt’s soothing, whisper-like vocals lull you into a stupor in the verses, before the chorus comes out swinging with rich, gritty guitars and steady drums that crash in the background. The lyrics balance more visceral horror with hints that reference our technological doom, warning us about “the way it feeds / ‘till we’re all dead”.
Given the subject matter, unfortunately, this is a film we’re all already in. The mix of syrupy sweetness and tension in the song reminds me of how much of our lives are already caught up in the madness of AI. If you’re a fan of SLEEP CLUB’s earlier work or a new listener, I’d highly recommend giving “Dweller” a listen, and stay tuned for their upcoming album release… and maybe grab some popcorn while you’re at it.
