Single: s a u e r – Cold Call

s a u e r’s Bandcamp profile reads “\\ professional sad girl tries to broaden her horizons one song at a time //”. If this is what that sounds like, then crack open a new box of tissues, cancel all our social engagements, and sign us up because this is fucking stunning.

Part Phoebe Bridgers, part Bright Eyes, with a whiff of Laura Veirs and a dash of The Watson Twins thrown in for good measure – Cold Call is an absolute assault on the heartstrings.

The delicate anti-folk/indie instrumentation is as tender and as delicately poised as anything we’ve heard this year, and the vocal is equally measured and assured. The sparse arrangement is absolutely enchanting, with the use of the violin probably being the standout – if we had to choose – but it’s all undeniably great. From the persistent electronic(?) beat, to the understated guitar and the really catchy, beautifully crafted “everybody knows a good man is hard to find” chorus, this is expertly realised.

Striking from the first second to the last moment, Cold Call will stop you in your tracks, and if it doesn’t, well, you might very well be dead inside. Enjoy.
