Single: raine – play dough

Hey, wake up, your favourite London soloist has just released another fantastic tune, and you need to listen to it right now! That’s right, raine’s back with her ever fantastic single ‘play dough’. Following along from their much beloved debut‘girls who don’t like girls’,‘play dough’ showcases a new side to the singer.

Describing teenage depression excellently through emotive lyrics, including“my therapist says I withdraw / people say I’m a chore so why do I feel like a child when I talk? / they told me to squeeze the Play Dough if it gets like this again”, you can’t help but be drawn into what raine has to say. It’s emotive, intimate, and beyond wiser than raine’s tender age would suggest.

With soulful vocals that remind me ofOlivia Dean and the mesmerising soundscape driven by guitars, raine wouldn’t be out of place on playlists which include the likes of Ethel Caine and Beebadoobee. Melodically, ‘play dough’ simple yet effortlessly catchy, with a gentle drum beat in the background. Nothing is the “star of the show”. Instead, they all work together to create something that enthrals listeners.

If ‘play dough’ is anything to go by, I won’t be shocked when raine eventually takes the world by storm. Beautiful and delicate, the song is for anyone who’s ever felt out of place in this world.
