Peira’s latest single “Away” frames a pop sensibility in the warm, fuzzy tones of pitch-perfect shoegaze guitars. From the opening seconds of this track, it is clear that we are in the capable hands of a songwriter well-versed in 90’s nostalgia and textured production.
The project is helmed by the solo artist Peira Moinester who hails from Brooklyn, and this single announces the imminent arrival of their like-minded EP Things That Come. (For the record, this “thing” will come on September 18th).
Synth pads underwrite the guitars throughout, and the moody tone sets the vibe for this rumination on a familiar but complex relationship. They sing “I will take one for ya / So you don’t fall deep inside”, before lamenting that they “Can’t carry this one for ya”. The artist captures the specificity of a particular relationship without devolving into so much detail that the song loses its punch.
Moinester plays everything on the single but the drums (which were written and recorded by Mike Dawson), and there is a clear connection between the sonic layers that makes each new part feel inevitable. Even the drums that come in around 38 seconds pick up the track right when the sparse guitars and dream pop vocal lines threaten to lose some of their momentum.
Rife with guitar hooks and ethereal vocals, this is a sound that draws on bands from Beach House to Best Coast. For fans of either, I strongly recommend getting a jump on the EP by giving “Away” a spin. You can do so through the links below.
