Brooklyn-based four-piece band LAPÊCHE have a rich history, with a husband and wife duo at its heart.
A formidable live act, they’re about to hit the road again on a co-headline US winter tour. Having already caught the attention of BBC Radio 6 Music and Spotify’s editorial team, their new single “Double Knotted” looks set to rope in an even bigger audience.
The song comes out swinging with a huge, infectious guitar riff and old-school synth strings. Colin Brooks’ drums hiss and crack like fireworks on the 4th of July, and Krista Diem’s vocal sits perfectly in the track with a diamond-like clarity. The angular melody contrasts nicely with the rolling guitars.
There’s a somber tension in the lyrics – and a pleasing economy of words which is often a little cryptic. They seem to speak of identity, expectation and self-acceptance. A struggle with emotions that are never fully resolved.
I am not my waves
The ins or the outs
How I can behave in my own house
Catalyst with not much detail
Half kindness with a dirty mouth
It’s hard not to get swept along with the effortless confidence and swagger – the track positively fizzes with electricity – but this rollercoaster of a song never stays in one space for very long. There’s wistful fragility and rich vocal harmony reminiscent of 90’s indie, alongside extended guitar notes and huge gated drums straight out of classic 80’s rock.
“Double Knotted” is full of textured details – Dave Diem’s distorted bass, the synth strings – even some unexpected claps! It all adds up to a thunderous, explosive avalanche that will bury you in a blizzard of hooks and harmonies.
LAPÊCHE never lets you settle – there is always another change, another development – another idea. There’s more light and shade than a broken venetian blind.
If you love the offbeat charm of indie and the bombast of stadium rock, don’t tie yourself in knots looking for your next favourite tune – it’s right here!
