There is a musical technique called “word painting”, where the music follows the lyrics – the classic example is singing the word “high” on a high note. “Falls Apart”, by Chicago-based project No Lonesome, takes this technique to its fullest potential, as the entire song sounds like it’s falling apart in the most glorious way. It teeters on the precipice in the classic way of Velvet Underground or Elliott Smith, jangling along like a mountain goat caravan across a rocky ridge. The way might be narrow, but your guide is sure-footed and has been this way before.
No Lonesome is the DIY project of musician and producer Jeb Backe. They describe their sound as “forward-thinking ear while flexing a studied understanding of what has come before.” The lead single of the new EP, Am I What I’m Not?, “Falls Apart” rides a steady beat and tambourine that gives the song a bouncy energy. The music really does fit the title to perfection; it’s a catchy, organic song that invites you to join in and sing or clap along. “Falls Apart” shows continued growth in No Lonesome’s sound, taking more chances and feeling like a new level has been achieved.
“Falls Apart” is available on Bandcamp, where you can also pre-order the EP. With a growing discography and an evolving sound, No Lonesome is one to look out for, especially for fans of introspective, honest music with a quirky alternative style.
