Canada-based artist / songwriter / producer Nixon Boyd is an industry veteran who has achieved many things. A member of the multi-million-streaming Canadian alt-rock institution Hollerado, he’s been nominated for Juno awards (the Canadian Grammys), had his music added to major streaming playlists, and has even had music featured in Schitt’s Creek (a huge TV show in case you didn’t know!)
Nixon says he wrote his new single “Golden Days” during the first few weeks after becoming a parent. Sleep deprived and with no idea what to do with a baby, there were however moments when everything seemed beyond perfect. So, to make these moments last beyond the short window of life with a young child, “Golden Days” was born.
From the very first note, the evocative bend on the guitar and the huge reverb creates a hot, dusty atmosphere. It floats in the background throughout the song. There’s a subtle piano too: A nice touch that adds warmth.
Nixon’s vocal is soft; the close harmonies and double tracking means it fills the track whilst staying intimate.
“I have a memory where your hands are on my face, Your fingertips feel like the softest thing God ever made.”
The arrangement is simple – there really isn’t much going on – but the melody has a catchy charm that hooks you in.
In 150 seconds the song says everything it came to say, and it will be there for NIxon’s son to revisit for years to come.
“Golden Days” is a beautifully heartfelt slice of indie-folk that will either bring a tear to your eye, or have you singing along with a smile on your face.
“May all your days be golden, long after I am gone.”
