I had a feeling from the jump that this one might be a tear-jerker. Cat Song by Neighbor Dog was released earlier this month, and the cover art caught my eye immediately. I knew that I had to listen and give my thoughts.
We’re met with a sludgy and dark bass line intro that leads into the explosion of sound that I know Neighbor Dog for. The post-punk guitar riffs are complemented perfectly by our lead vocalist’s light and bouncy tone. The scream a little before the halfway mark took me off guard during my first listen, but I found myself on my knees waiting for it to strike my ears again and again…what a great, crisp and cathartic scream.
This song breaks my heart in many ways, as it seems to be a tribute to a very special cat named Bella (as mentioned in the Bandcamp credits). I assume she is the cute tortie baby on the cover art, and she reminds me so much of my own two tortoiseshells that I love very much. Unfortunately, our pets will most likely not be with us for our entire lives, and that’s what makes the time with them super special.
The lyrics that hit me really hard in this track are: “I’d talk for days / Just to explain all the ways / I love you / I love you / What can I do / For a little more time with you,” and “How can I keep you here / Forever / Forever.”
Listening to this song has made me hug my cats even tighter, and this is a gorgeous tribute to Bella. This amazing track will live on forever in her name, and I thank Neighbor Dog for sharing her spirit with us through this beautiful song.
