A full throttle, frantic burst of energy – the new single from prolific Croydon trio My Best Unbeaten Brother is a step up from the singles that have come before it.
At this stage, it’s well established that we’re firm fans of the band, and on The Cracks And The Creases And The Mistakes, they keep that enthusiasm going. They seem to have added a new wrinkle to their repertoire on this one, having also incorporated an almost emo energy in addition to their usual ramshackle indie charm.
Like The Rakes covering Hell Is For Heroes, it’s scratchy post-punky indie with an almost American feeling undercurrent – we’re reminded of the work of bands like Cursive, Desaparecidos, and Jimmy Eat World.
Lyrically, we’re told the song is about “getting older and seeing a stranger in the mirror,” as well as “assessing your life and realising there are loads of terrible things you could have done, but you never did them, so surely that’s a good thing?” On the whole, it feels like it’s about introspection and regret, but also a strange, warped sense of pride. Ostensibly – as with the rest of the singles they’ve released so far this year (one a month thus far) – it’s about the human condition. Something we can all relate to for better or worse.
Roll on next month and their next single release!
