Denver Colorado’s Mlady have been putting out music steadily since 2019. Their new track – Baby Water Blue – comes across like a blend of Elliott Smith, Big Star and Lush.
There are also touches of more modern influences like Soccer Mommy, Phoebe Bridgers and Weyes Blood.
The instrumentation here is indie, but leaning pretty heavily into the alt-rock universe, getting grittier and more boisterous as the song progresses. In parts, the music is somewhat at odds with the emotionally overloaded, blissfully honeyed vocals of frontwoman, songwriter and head honcho Hannah Beeghly – but the juxtaposition works very well. So well in fact that it’s hard to imagine it any other way.
Over the course of the act’s 6-year career, there has only been one full-length album. Here’s hoping that changes soon!
