Single: Midnight Housework – Just To Be Enough

Belfast-based indie rock band Midnight Housework have not been around long, but are already making an impression. They are back with their 4th single, Just To Be Enough.

Unlike previous tracks, JTBE was not preconceived or planned, but is based on an impromptu 8-minute jam.

The band writes: “…lyrically it’s just about what it says on the tin, how hard it can feel sometimes to simply just be enough for something, or someone…this song is saying you’re not alone and you most definitely ARE enough”.

I think the energy and excitement of that jam session feed back into the positive message of the song to produce an immersive and uplifting track.

There is an immediate, smooth, clean sound. The snare – like a starter’s pistol – keeps everything in check, together with the quick-fire bass.

I really liked the vocal delivery of Sean Hogan – it’s so expressive as he stretches & elongates the words like an elastic band.

The melody slowly rises and falls in the verse, and it feels like we are flying over rolling hills. The guitars utilise multiple tones & the layers sweep us along.

It feels like we’ve been taken to the top of the hill just as the staccato pulse of the guitar solo starts, and – with notes emphasised by the snare – it pushes us along & over the edge. We are sent hurtling along on one final, exhilarating, intoxicating ride.

Just To Be Enough is out now.
