Single: Matt Hooper – Do It All Again

Written on a late-night bus after working as a glass collector in a club in Liverpool, ‘Do It All Again’ reflects on trying to find a real connection with someone in a distracted, disconnected world.

Seasoned singer-songwriter Matt Hooper cites a seemingly disparate duo of influences – Northern England indie and the music of Nashville, Tennessee. However, as his new single reveals, Matt’s intuitive songwriting and strong sense of identity mean it makes perfect sense in the end.

‘Do It All Again’ opens with a velvety smooth, warm sound. There are some nice atmospherics – brittle, metallic guitar plucks – subtle panned sounds that are almost like clinking bottles and glasses. In fact, little details reveal themselves the more you listen – a piano here, a tambourine there.

The thunderous rhythm section and jagged guitar tone create a powerful sound that pushes forward, advancing with glacier-like weight.

Matt’s vocal oozes character and has the perfect tone to wrap around the track, threading the melody in and out of each bar.

The angular solo guitar melodies gave the track an unexpected edge, and there’s a beautiful simplicity to the track as it builds and builds. Together with those crunchy, fuzzy guitars, there’s a familiar 90’s throwback sound – the vocal grounding things with a lower, calmer tone. In just a few words, the scene is set – I was whisked back to earlier days:

Daylight would see me stumble in
Home from the black & blue kids Ee’d up on the weekend
They do it all again

This is a perfectly constructed single with huge riffs and a grimy, cathartic punch of a chorus that’s effortlessly infectious – after hearing Matt’s new single, you really will want to ‘Do It All Again’!
