Houston-based sextet oh, hooray is an interesting and unique proposition. They’re basically an art commune – they live together, create together, succeed together, fail together. Their work ranges from music to film to theatre to animation and much more in between.
Their new track TWO BLOCKS DOWN (AND I’M CHOKING UP) is a real hodge-podge of a tune. It’s a lot to digest. It’s primarily indie-folk, but it also contains elements of pop, psych, and electronica, and it’s an enchanting, fervent blend. Stylistically, we’re largely in Bright Eyes territory – observational lyrics that flit from morose to darkly humorous, emotion and earnestness in abundance and bottled up angst eventually leading to explosive energy. There are also touches of acts like Tokyo Police Club, Noah & The Whale and The Flaming Lips.
The accompanying music video is a vibrant depiction of many of their artistic disciplines, rolled into one and is well worth four minutes of your time. They have a record coming out next year called “the city has teeth i think i saw them once” – we’ll very much look forward to it.
