Marty Blick doesn’t seem to have released much music thus far – just a handful of recent singles – but he certainly seems to have hit the ground running, with a fully formed modern country sound and a strong persona.
His recently released single is ‘Throw My Body In The Trash’ (yes, really!).
The song slowly fades in, sounding warm and spacious. The simple arrangement helps us to focus on that immediately catchy melody – it grabs you right away and makes you sit up and listen.
There are some cool melodic flourishes that echo Rufus Wainwright. Marty has a wide vocal range, and at each extreme, he sounds full and powerful. It’s a really distinctive, characterful voice with great control.
Without wishing to state the obvious, ‘Throw My Body In The Trash’ is a song with a dark subject, but it feels light and is full of humorous lines. My favourite was:
Well now dignity’s an industry
pawned off on the deceased
and I would drink with my garbage man
long before I’d trust some priest
This is a great country-pop song that has real soul. I feel like this would go down a storm in a live environment and be a fan favourite.
I’m eager to see what Marty does next.
