Over here in the United States of America – a great nation totally not on the brink of collapse, folks! – we’re on the precipice of midterm elections. These will determine the country’s next two years: Will Republicans continue to hold on to power and drag the nation deeper into fascism, or will Democrats take over at least one chamber of Congress and… well… do whatever it is that Democrats do? Will Vermin Supreme somehow stage a coup?
One thing’s for sure: No matter which way the tide turns, if you live in the U.S., you’re going to get a lot of calls and texts from political parties and campaigns asking for money. Chances are you already have, or that they never stopped! That’s the crux of Franny Menace’s new single “Nancy”, an indie pop-punk track with former House Speaker and serial texter Nancy Pelosi as its namesake.
Franny Menace is a relatively new band in the Brooklyn scene, forming in late 2024; they’ve spent the last couple years building up a small but mighty following. “Nancy” is their second single, following this past June’s “What Do You Want From Me”. Both tracks feature the spunky attitudes of original members Sydni Dichter (vox/guitar) and Maddy Cerrito (bass), as well as Cole Birmingham (guitar/vox) and Adam Finkelstein (drums). But where the first single was a slow burn, “Nancy” is uptempo and fierce, where Dichter treats politicians like partners who’ve jilted them one too many times.
The band launches a pretty solid musical attack against political parties acting more as bank accounts and less as organizations supporting people. It doesn’t just stop with calling out the two major bodies either: It chews out the DSA, phishing schemes masking as job sites, doomscrolling, and governments deciding to go to war to improve poll numbers while cutting funding for other departments: Healthcare, education, SNAP benefits, and so on.
Of course, while everything in this country seems to go down the tubes regardless of who’s in power, are most folks with the ability to do something worried about it? No, they’re texting and calling us for the money you and I don’t have. We’d have more, maybe, but folks were too busy hitting us up for small dollar donations instead of actually worrying about our welfare. Franny Menace’s new track hits deep in this election season, folks. It doesn’t matter that Nancy Pelosi isn’t in office anymore; for all us Americans, her spirit still lingers in our hearts, and her texts still ping our phones.
We’ll be keeping an eye on Franny Menace; in the meantime, take a listen to “Nancy” below. (And if you live in the U.S.: Register to vote, and then go vote in November. You get a free sticker!)
