Single: Madeleine Rose – Caroline

Rose’s third single of the year once again showcases her melodic voice, singing tenderly about carrying someone’s spirit with you long after they’ve gone.

A couple of months ago, we posted about Madeleine Rose’s renaissance single “Strangers”, marking her return to releasing music. Since then, she’s comfortably settled back into the songwriting game, releasing her second single, “Ego Trip”. Now, here’s “Caroline”, her third single leading up to her debut solo EP Strangers, which drops on July 15.

“Caroline” takes inspiration from Rose’s grandmother, as well as the feeling of carrying someone’s spirit long with you after they’re gone. In under three minutes, she sings about how holding on to memories of that person can guide a path toward the purest parts of yourself: “You’ll never know ’til you’ve tried / So let your heart be the guide / Just like a child”.

Where “Strangers” and “Ego Trip” were a bit more poppy, “Caroline” has a more subdued feel – softer and more tender, for sure – but the song builds throughout its duration, like emotions while flipping through an old photo album. It still features Rose’s warm vocals as the centerpiece, along with finger-picked guitar that sounds like memories flowing through the heart. And the lyrics remain simple, but effective when Rose sings them. She makes it clear that the song comes from deep in her soul, in the same place where she carries her grandmother’s spirit.

It is once again another great release from Rose ahead of Strangers, which you should look out for next month. Take a listen to “Caroline” below.
