Single: Little Angry & The Sweets – Outerside

Little Angry & The Sweets is the musical project of Seattle-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Evan Hashi.

In a steaming-hot Californian shipping container (which doubles as a recording studio!) & together with long-time collaborators Jen Weisberg (bass, vocals) and Joe Kuta (guitar, vocals), the forthcoming album “Screamin’ Inside Your Heart!!!” was recorded.

Outerside is the first single taken from that album.

Things start with a simple drum groove and a single, repeated note – this, it turns out, is the calm before the experimental storm.

The track has a wide open sound with lots of space, and a really inventive, stream-of-consciousness feel. A halting, stuttering rhythm with an expansive melody that meanders and never seems to settle. It’s a constantly evolving beast.

Awash with lush, layered vocals and long chords from space-age guitars, this is a real tour de force of psych rock, among many other things – think Pink Floyd mixed with the Beach Boys, sprinkled with a little Frank Zappa.

The song builds and builds, layer upon layer, into a final extended crescendo that feels like the arrival of some mothership from Alfa Centauri.

It all comes back down to earth fairly abruptly with 4 descending solo guitar chords.

There are so many ideas and so much inventiveness here – you can tell that they’ve spent years honing this music. I feel like I could listen to this 100 times and still hear something new. As the song says:

I want to get to know the other side. It looks so far away, it will take some time

Outerside is available on Bandcamp now – the album will be released on October 3rd.
