‘crashtest’ is a new single by ji! and the style is dream new wave pop. Straight off the bat, I can hear The Cure, Joy Division, and The Smiths in the bass and guitar riffs, as well as the drums and synth parts. But the way this is produced and mixed is entirely different, adding a twist to what one would expect. It is quite lo-fi, a repetitive, punky/goth-inspired tune that draws from dream pop in the sense that it features a washed-away haze in the overall sound. According to the artist, “The song is basically about how we waste so much time in our relationships trying to either conform to, or in some way change the other person to fit with each other, and how it’s much easier to just let go and enjoy each other’s company and relax!”
Also, “I just want to make fun songs that I enjoy playing and not really worry too much about what it is or how it should sound! Just trying to have fun and release whatever I feel like releasing without pressure.”
And THAT my friends, probably makes ji! the happiest person in the room. 🙂
