Single: Jessica Wolfbird – Mostly clouds & light

Jessica Wolfbird is a trained musician whose music has already been featured in movies and commercials. She says her current song count is an incredible 15,000! Let’s start with her new single, ‘Mostly clouds & light’.

All sorts of memories were conjured up when I started listening to this song. The piano tone & melody, the atmosphere. I was reminded of some dramatic, epic alt-rock sounds from my youth – a little God Machine here, a pinch of Smashing Pumpkins there – sprinkle in some Crash Test Dummies and add some Tori Amos for good measure, too!

But this song is so much more than that, and I was soon fully enveloped in its warmth. The piano glides along with an expert touch. There is a lovely, rounded tone and a wonderfully light melody, but it somehow adds weight to the track too. Deftly, the piano moves between being mournful and triumphant.

The simple drum track provides the perfect backbone to the song as the piano tells its story.

Then we come to the vocal – and what a vocal it is! Bursting with character and an expressive, lilting, childlike cadence – it’s the star of the show and the standout element for sure. Jessica sings a subtle melody that creates a sense of story and drama.

This is a simple arrangement that lets the vocal shine through, and it leaves a lasting impression.

‘Mostly clouds & light’ is the first and only single off of the upcoming Jessica Wolfbird album, ‘Trees for clouds.’
