Arising from a writing exercise, “Kids” by Jacob Brodovsky quickly blossomed into something far bigger than a simple creative task. Now it’s the latest single released ahead of his upcoming album Tell The Kids We Tried (out on the 10th of July).
Detailing the inescapable dread and delight of having children, “Kids” quickly cemented itself as one of my newfound favourites of the folk genre. The punchy beat is balanced out by the faint hint of melancholia that permeates the track. I imagine that it’s a nervous time in anyone’s life to introduction of kids into the world, especially when that world is collapsing under the weight of itself. Brodovsky has captured these feelings down to a t.
Talking about the track, he notes: “I was/am really struggling with the idea of bringing kids into the world while knowing how hellbent we are as a collective civilization on destroying it.” For such a deep and complex message, it translates effortlessly into a song format with standout lyrics including “Tell the kids we tried” and “What will we owe the next generation when they ask what we did with the home we gave them?” It’s a testament to the Canadian’s songwriting abilities; I mean, it’s no wonder he won English Songwriter of the Year at the 2024 Canadian Music Awards!
In spite of the perceived sadness, there’s a definite sense of hope too. The wonder that comes from watching a child learn and grow pairs nicely with Brodovsky’s gentle voice, which is reminiscent of other artists including Ben Gibbard and John K. Samson. With enthusiastic guitar lines, everything helps to turn “Kids” from something good into something extraordinary.
