A shimmering arpeggio greets the listener at the outset of “No Other”, the new single from Nashville-based songwriter/producer Jack Landess. Warm, warbly overtones ripple in the space between notes like a sunset cast against the faraway crests of waves. Right on cue, the drums announce an urgent post-punk tempo, and the stage is set.
“No Other” is a catchy surfwave ballad that blends sun-kissed alt/indie sensibilities with the viscous textural presence of dream-pop and shoegaze. The result is a yearning song that never quite surprises, but nor does it disappoint. Fans of Beach Fossils, Day Way, and Far Caspian will find plenty to enjoy in this finely crafted track.
In many ways, “No Other” feels like a spiritual B-side to Landess’s previous release, “Adelaide”. Both tracks are mined from the same emotional material: A love story told retrospectively, from the vantage point of love’s fulfillment. Landess plays skillfully with minimalist arrangements, using the ebb and flow of stacked textures to control the track’s momentum. Dreamy guitars and a rich, refined production evoke the thrill of first glances and blossoming connections on a humid summer night, while Landess’s breathless, intimate vocal delivery heightens the sense of longing.
The closing arpeggio echoes the anticipatory calm of the opening, like a restless dawn looking back to the dusk—bookends to an all-nighter spent falling in love. Listen to “No Other” below.
