This year, there has been a noticeable trend among emerging bands drawing inspiration from the lo-fi alternative rock scene of the 1990s. It feels like this theme has permeated the music landscape, as we’ve encountered a plethora of artists delving into slowcore and shoegaze genres, styles that harken back to the very years when I first entered the world. While the reasons behind this nostalgic resurgence remain somewhat elusive, I find myself thoroughly enjoying the revival.
The music often features drenched, slow tempos accompanied by slightly distorted guitars that create a rich, atmospheric sound. Vocals typically possess a raw, almost punk-like quality, yet they are delivered with a modern flair that resonates with today’s audience. A prime example of this trend is Inventory’s latest single, which intriguingly incorporates a unique trumpet element. This addition adds a remarkable layer of depth to the composition, enhancing its overall texture and elevating the listening experience.
“Fencesitters marks the band’s first single from their upcoming release, and it’s one of the heavier tracks, both lyrically and musically. The song explores the deadlock that can arise in a relationship when one person’s dream is the other person’s greatest fear. As evident in the chorus, there is both a desperation and an apathy to being stuck, together, while time moves past you. The music is heavy and slow, like a freight train rolling through a summer night. The vocal melodies wind between hopelessness and optimism before the song ends in a desperate crescendo of jagged guitars and trumpets (Played by UK collaborator Tommy Peach).”
As indicated in the recent press releases, the upcoming single is a track from their anticipated EP set to be released at the end of January. This particular single features a slightly heavier sound compared to their previous work, while still embodying the essence of slowcore, which has become synonymous with this talented Danish alternative rock band.
Despite being on the scene for just over a year, they have quickly made a name for themselves, and this new single showcases their potential for an exciting release to come. I was genuinely impressed by the raw energy and emotional depth this track offers, leaving me eager and curious to hear how the entire EP will come together. In the meantime, listeners can look forward to enjoying a blend of 90s slowcore influences infused with a modern twist, creating a unique auditory experience that both honors the past and pushes boundaries in contemporary music.
