For such a lyrically optimistic track, Wishful Thinking feels cathartically melancholy, and it’s easy to understand why. Self-recorded and produced, the song was born in the wake of the band’s rehearsal space burning to the ground. After losing amps, guitars, and numerous effects, tools that every musician grows reliant on and sentimental with. Honey I’m Home stands like a White Asphodel among the ashes of their debut single.
Composed of members from Marathon, Jagd, and Banji, Honey I’m Home has already made an incredible impact. Opening for Goat Girl, The Buoys, and Hotline TNT, performing at Girl in Red’s show at the AFAS Live, and completing two UK tours supporting Blood Wizard. Wishful Thinking is an impressive cut championing the best of both shoegaze and emo. Waves of melody and distortion crash into the listener as they float on a sea of reverb and modulation. Fans of Heavensward, or Cloakroom will feel right at home as the band deftly navigates between overflowing walls of sound and more stripped-down settings. Honey I’m Home demonstrates a powerful knack for dynamics following the calm affirmation “wishful thinking over dreaming” with a tsunami of distortion that moves the listener by force.
A thoughtful moment of clarity before a tidal wave of emotion. A standout feature would be the impressive blending of vocals. Multiple singers overlap and intertwine seamlessly. Certain voices rise above others at key moments giving the track a subtle curiosity amongst moments of contagious passion. Mixed by the legendary Sonny Diperri, Wishful Thinking is a pleasantly cathartic experience. Like tossing old photos into a fire, watching memories curl and warp in real-time. Now, I’ll leave you with a poignant quote from guitarist and vocalist Sofie Ooteman, “I love fuzz blablabla emo 4 life.” Needless to say, if you fuck with that, you’ll fuck with Honey I’m Home.
