Single: Hayes Noble – Seven

There’s something achingly nostalgic about the fizzing thrum of this lo-fi, acoustic guitar-driven slice of romantic, bedroom folk-pop. It feels like it could be found buried on a Rough Trade shops singer-songwriter sampler, all Lou Barlow’s lethargic haze, tape hiss, and cracked, yearning vocals.

Its production is a deliberate choice – adding to the pre-winter, rain-slicked ambience – it captures, in its three minutes, the strange and conflicting magic of youthful longing. It’s also a real departure for Hayes Noble, whose previous records have seen the Spokane, Washington resident work up a wall of more blown-out, punk-indebted noise to great effect. However, there’s a confidence to this deliberately stripped-back presentation that works for him, allowing the listener to grasp the core of the songwriting.

The first single off Noble’s upcoming album, Never Blue, set to be released on October 17th, Seven is an autumnal hug of a song that’s well worth allowing yourself to be embraced by.
