Weird rock is my favorite kind of rock. Give me delightfully esoteric lyrics, bizarre riffs, and surprising chord progressions. Grocer’s latest release, “El Toro,” delivers all of this and more. With honest lyrics that lean existential and allude to a difficult childhood, “El Toro” is a noisy anthem that tackles challenging subject matter with a rebelliously joyful spirit. “I grew up counting out the seasons like epochs in my mind,” sings Danielle Lovier, “I never thought I’d live to see the other side.” Driving, fuzzed-out guitar and vocals create a blurry soundscape that feels like running a little too fast downhill, wondering if you’re going to make it to the bottom without falling. And, if you’re a Grocer, it turns out you will.
