Twenty years into making music as Generifus, Spencer Sult still writes like someone with nothing to prove, just a song and the truth of it. “Bird Beak” opens the door to his next project, Pulling on the Seam, and it does it the simplest way possible with plain vocals, plain strumming, organ, and backing voices drifting in creatively when the song needs the extra weight.
The song opens with acoustic guitars before the vocals come in, eerie and calm, just like a trance. The drums are designed to hit subtly at a steady, unhurried pace, giving everything a raw and live feel. The melodies are warm and homely, matching the energy of the trippy vocals with little guitar licks here and there to add colour without distracting the song’s calm mood.
The sound design shows real attention to detail. The song feels calm and dreamy, with an engineering approach reminiscent of classic recordings. The vocals have a distinct live performance texture, while the instrumentals sound full and clean, with every sound given room to breathe.
I’m just trying to shed this skin
But the last one’s sticking to me
There no other plan for slow leak
Bird beak pecking at my hand
The lyrics sit in that strange space of wanting to move on while still dragging the past along with you, intentions that don’t quite hold, change that comes slower and messier than planned. That bird beak image, something small and persistent chipping at you, captures that feeling well; moving forward doesn’t mean the old stuff stops nagging at you.
“Bird Beak” is a good song that stirs up emotion through its arrangement, atmosphere, and its subtle tension. It leaves you wanting more from Generifus, and we look forward to hearing what they bring to their upcoming project, “Pulling on the Seam”.
