EDITH, a band based out of Denver, brings us a fresh emo sound with their single, “Among The Spiders”, the first track that we got a look at from their newest release, the EP I’m Drowning But I Know I Dreamt It, and careful listeners will know that the EP’s title is the same as a line in “Among The Spiders”. Evan, a guitarist and vocalist in EDITH, was super awesome when I reached out asking about “Among The Spiders” after seeing a video of a live performance of the single. I fell in love with the track after seeing that video and just had to know more about it. Evan was very gracious and kind to give me so much information and I’m super excited to share that insight with everyone.
One of the things I asked Evan about was the overall creation of the track, and Evan said, “‘Among The Spiders’ is a very important song to the band and ended up defining a lot of our writing going forward. It was one of the first songs we wrote for EDITH. One of the most defining parts are the vocal trade offs and all three of us singing lead parts throughout the song. The more collaborative style of vocals became a trademark in the rest of our material. Besides the vocals, the guitar is the other main instrument to take lead on the song. Most of the verse repeats bouncy tapping riffs that dances around the vocal melody.” Those bouncy tapping riffs are one of my favorite parts of the track and one of the things that drew me in to this track in the first place.
I also asked about lyrical inspiration and what led to some of the absolutely incredible and sing along-worthy lines. Evan said, “The lyrics came to me during a very vulnerable and depressing time. It was spring and there were bunch of bugs around for some reason. I would shut down and not communicate with anyone, spending time in my home infested with spiders. This made me spiral into a bit of an existential crisis. The song both discusses living among the spiders and behaving like an insect, or something that people look upon with disgust. What started as something very literal ended up becoming self-reflective and deprecating. It reflects upon who we spend our time with and around and what do we think of them. Are we proud of our actions, our friends and our past? Or do we look at them with disgust like an insect?” Yet another reason why this song is so good – it forces us to think and consider and before we know it, we find the song repeating and giving us even more to consider.
And finally, I asked Evan about overall inspiration that led into “Among The Spiders”. Evan said, “‘Among The Spiders’ reflects upon the poor decisions of my past, however, I did try to include a bit of hope in there (“I’ll rip out of this web that I’m stuck in…”). I didn’t want the song to have a total hopeless vibe by any means. The self-deprecating lyrics are juxtaposed with a somewhat happy and at times melancholy instrumental.” That juxtaposition is another reason why I’m absolutely obsessed with this track. Those gorgeous riffs and the energy of the instrumentals combined with the tone and wording of the lyrics makes for such an interesting, thought-provoking, and utterly captivating track.
EDITH is one of those bands that you’re stoked to find, one of those bands that immediately becomes part of your current and future playlists. EDITH makes waves in the Denver emo scene and in the DIY emo scene all over the world – their newest EP is sure to become a pillar of the DIY emo scene and will be one of those things that I recommend to new listeners every time.
