Even though we have previously explored the newer music from the Irish band Dystopian Novels, hailing from Cork, they recently shared their earlier single titled “16,” which deserves attention. While I may not be able to capture Chloe’s eloquent description of their latest work, I encourage you to experience it for yourself.
The music of Dystopian Novels draws from a diverse array of genres, blending elements of dream pop with influences reminiscent of 1970s sounds. This eclectic mix makes it challenging to pigeonhole their music into the conventional categories we often encounter in today’s music scene. This very quality is what captivates me about their sound. It’s also why I felt compelled to write about “16,” their debut single released in February. This track invites listeners to embark on a journey alongside the band. As the soothing ballad unfolds, I find myself getting lost in its enchanting melodies, which linger well after the song ends.
Since “16,” they have also released another single titled “10 Years Later,” which continues their exploration of introspective ballads infused with dreamy melodies. The track evokes a sound that may remind listeners of Cigarettes After Sex but with a twist that leans more toward folk or dream pop. Whichever label you prefer, “10 Years Later” presents another beautifully crafted atmosphere while maintaining the distinctive sound that sets them apart from other submissions we often encounter.
I have always cherished moments when music surprises me, offering something fresh and different that I haven’t encountered recently. Given the overwhelming volume of music that floods our streams—hundreds of new tracks submitted each month—it’s easy for sounds to begin blending into a monotonous mix. However, Dystopian Novels undeniably stand out, creating haunting and melancholic melodies that resonate deeply, making you feel emotions you might not even realize you had. Their artistry invites you to reflect, to feel, and perhaps even to shed a tear or two as you immerse yourself in their unique sonic world.
