“Heady Thinkers Union” is the second single from Dream Composite, the new album from San Diego-based singer/songwriter Drew Pelisek, which is out now. This live in-studio rendition is full of character, charm, and chemistry.
With the sound of retro-rockers like Tom Petty and Teenage Fanclub, as well as more modern influences like The Beths and The Strokes, it’s a perfect blend of rock and pop. Drew has been releasing music since 2018, and you can hear the experience in this songwriting. Having performed in bands such as CHON, Weatherbox, and The Fall of Troy, he is able to turn his hand to a variety of styles, from shoegaze to garage and even experimental electronica.
Shot, edited, recorded, mixed, and (we must say expertly) produced by Jonah Marc Levine, the band sound in magnificent form here. Clearly incredibly well rehearsed, they seem prepared to take on the world.
Lyrically, “Heady Thinkers Union” is — in the words of the man himself — “an attempt at convincing oneself to stay the course, trust in what you believe in as well as yourself, and know that is enough to get you where you want to be.” I’m sure, as artists, writers, musicians, and more, that sentiment is more than relatable to many of us and will resonate deeply. Sometimes it’s hard to “trust the process”, but if what you end up with is a tune like this, it’s clearly well worth keeping the faith.
