Single: Dream Jeans – Soundcheck 77

Sounding a bit like Willy Mason and Syd Barrett collaborating on a cover of a song from I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning, Soundcheck 77 is a charming lo-fi, low-key ditty full of interweaving parts and complementary textures.

The backbone is a steady no-nonsense backbeat. This gives Dream Jeans and indeed their instruments the freedom to explore. There’s a wobbly slide guitar, warm acoustic, distorted tones, maybe some subtle keys(?), reverb parts and toward the end, even something that sounds almost like a theremin, but probably isn’t.

Anyway, all these components come together to make something that is at the same time kinda sad-sounding, but also undeniably playful.

The back story behind the origins of the sound of the song is interesting. In the words of the band: “The track came from buying an old mixing desk on eBay. When it arrived it looked like it had been taken out of the bin, all the faders were scratchy, but when we plugged the guitar in and cranked it, the distortion was like a warm hug. I had written the song about some of the isolation you can feel as a performer and how it can start to interfere with having a life outside of performing if you’re not careful. I wanted to deliver this message in a very tender way utilising this warm hug sound of the new desk and this track has paved the way for some of the upcoming tunes.”

We look forward to hearing them.
