Meandering between genres with expertise and aplomb, the new single from Moscow quintet Dog Silent, “Welcome to the Ocean of My Drowned Stars,” is really quite the prospect.
Moody, gloomy, motorik, gothic, mesmeric: It’s an enchanting, pensive blend of persistent, hypnotic instrumentation, layered in such a way that it feels almost spooky.
The massive shoegazey guitars swirl and wash over you like a crisp, cold wave; the beats (which sound like a combination of acoustic and electronic, although we could be wrong) feel similarly chilly, and the constant, throbbing bass guitar is the linchpin that holds everything together. The vocals engulf you in a similarly widescreen/cinematic, all-consuming fashion.
Think dark post-punk meets Radiohead with a female vocalist delivering her version of mystical folk songs or psychedelic incantations, and you’re halfway there. It also veers – at certain times – a little bit into new wave, krautrock, alt-rock, and goth rock territory.
It’s almost overwhelming. Repeated listens will perhaps leave you feeling a little claustrophobic – if you’re anything like us – like you’re living in a box surrounded by these sounds. It’s quite the sensation and, frankly, is a potent demonstration of the power of music.
