After making a thunderous, bassy, grimy post-punky start, the dark new single “Twinkle” from Crab puts the pedal all the way down to the metal.
A bit like what Idles collaborating with Liars on a cover of an old Mudhoney tune might sound like, on “Twinkle”, this rocking Brooklyn quintet knows only one speed: Head down, full tilt, and entirely committed.
The second single from the band’s collaboration with Stephen “Gear Daddy” Kurpis from Vitruvian Sound, here they seem to be channeling the spirit of musical provocateurs who came before them like Sonic Youth and Lightning Bolt. Twinkle is extremely noisy, massively abrasive and overflowing with attitude.
There are definitely some moments of dynamic light and shade here: The song does ebb and flow, to some extent, and there are different tonal textures at play. But we’d wager that what you ultimately take away from it will mostly be the moments where everything is in the red, for there is simply no ignoring them.
An agitated, frantic, cacophonous noise, this is like a shot in the arm or a punch in the face. “Twinkle” is an audible odyssey in just under three minutes, and is a track that will not be easily forgotten. Take a listen to it below:
