“Frogman”, the debut single from Colourwash, has the speed of punk, the effects/production elements of alt-rock, and the soul of 1990s/2000s emo. This makes it seem like a bizarre slot-machine display that features three completely different symbols. In reality, it’s a unique blend with a great payout.
One band I thought about when I heard this Colourwash single was At the Drive-In. The difference between these bands might be a matter of tempo, vibes, and screaming. If I wrote this on another day, I might have picked another fuzzier band or even another subgenre. You could even compare this work to the cryptic period known as post-grunge. Regardless of the labels, this will surely scratch the itch of any rock fan. Hats off to the drummer Elliot Collings for going the extra mile.
Taking all of the technical elements out of it, the singer seems to perform at his own intriguing speed. This might be the secret weapon for the group going forward. The musical acceleration doesn’t stop, keeping the energy up as it all speeds toward the end. At the end, much like the lyrics discuss, you’ll be “coming up for air.” If it was any longer, it might’ve been too much for some. The band finishes in a Kentucky Derby-like pace. Thankfully, this whirlwind experience doesn’t overwhelm or overstay its welcome.
