Single: Chip Pirrs – Yellow From Green

A genre-fluid patchwork of sonic adventure and bold decision making, Yellow From Green is eminently enchanting and instantly mesmerising.

Genre-fluid in his approach, Brooklyn-based artist and songwriter Chip Pirrs is a walking mish-mash.

A patchwork of sonic adventure and bold decision-making, on Yellow From Green, the channels act as varied and diverse as Passion Pit, Autechre, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Only Son, TV On The Radio, The Postal Service and The Shins to produce something eminently enchanting and instantly mesmerising.

There’s an almost childlike naivety to some of the elements – the soft vocals, the programmed percussion, the repetitive guitar towards the end – simple, understated parts that come together and complement each other perfectly. Not only do they complement each other, but they also feel necessary in relation to the others. Like each component is a pillar supporting a musical structure, and without one, it would come tumbling down. Each part feels intrinsic to the song’s overall feeling.

Dreamlike and hazy for the most part, the song feels like an electronic balm, soothing and serene, until, in the last quarter, the aforementioned guitars come in and turn the world we’ve come to know upside down.

Crafted in collaboration with fellow Brooklyite Sarah High (on gorgeous Au Revoir Simone-esque backing vocals), Pirrs has really outdone himself on this one.
